Spanish students teach elementary kids

The students at Westside Elementary get a taste of foreign language though Lori Nielsen’s Spanish classes.

“I can learn Spanish and redo because I forgot everything from last year except for my colors,” said student Michael Burchfield.

“We’re learning about Spanish and they are teaching us,” said student Tray Young.

Senior Kenneth Wilson is a good instructor to the kids at Westside.

“I am teaching elementary school students spanish. One reason, we get a grade for it. Two, I like to teach,” said he said. “They are really fun to teach. They make me feel young.”

Even though Wilson is in Spanish, he still thrives to speak the language fluently.

“I want to learn Spanish, because I have a bunch of family in Panama. They all speak spanish, but some speak a little English,” said Wilson. “I would really like to be able to communicate with them better.”

The Westside students look up to the Spanish students.

“My favorite part about this trip up here is just seeing the little kids faces and they start to remember your name and, hopefully, we’ll remember theirs,” said Wilson. “They’re really happy to see you, and some of them, if not most, really want to learn spanish. A lot of them actually remember the things you teach them each week.”
