Santa visits courthouse square

“I do this twice a week on Fridays and Saturdays, but as we get closer to the end of the year before Christmas, I’m up here just about every day for a couple hours,” said Mike Wood, who is playing Santa.

Santa has many things he enjoys in doing his job.

“My favorite part is being able to wave at people when they drive by and see the little kids. When the kids come up here and sit on my lap and they get a beautiful smile on their face and they get to tell me what they want for Christmas,” said Wood.

The Searcy Santa has been on the square for many years.

“The Searcy Santa has been here for numerous years, probably thirty years, but this particular Santa has been here for ten years that I know for sure,” said Rhonda Wood.

There are many benefits to having a Santa on the square besides the obvious.

“Bring folks downtown, enjoy downtown Searcy and if you’ll look at this lovely courthouse that’s decorated so beautifully at night time; It’s just a pretty thing to see,” said Rhonda Wood.

Though it seems easy being Santa, isn’t all what it is made up to be.

“Well the reindeer have to stay outside the city limits. The code enforcers do not like to have reindeer leftovers here around the court square,” said Wood.

If you haven’t seen Santa this year, be sure to come out to the square to see him.
