Youth basketball league engages kids

Screen Shot 2013-02-27 at 2.24.06 PMThe sun is rising, the birds are chirping, and all is normal on this saturday morning. But while most kids are snug in their beds, watching cartoons, or eating cereal these kids are busy doing what they love:  Basketball.

But this is no ordinary league.

The upward program promises to teach important life lessons and promote an encouraging atmosphere.

“We have devotions during our practice, and in the middle of our games, to talk about Christ and spread the word,” Upward coach Blake Schowe stated.

It is not only a competitive sport, but it is something that youth, all around, can participate in.

“Upward is different because it gives kids a Christian environment, where there is a positive experience,” FBC youth Pastor Matt Fike said.

It’s apparent that Upward basketball has been more than a sports league to some kids, but an experience beyond any other.

“I like it so much because it is good sportsmanship for the things that you do,” Upward youth participant Jacob Schowe said

This goes to show that maybe there really is more to sports than just winning.
