Cell phone policy changes for students

Screen Shot 2013-09-27 at 2.19.54 PMWith many new changes in policies, one that is going unnoticed is the cell phone policy.

“The cell phone policy is more lenient this year then it has been in the past,” said principal Claude Smith.

The new policy is, instead of the first offense being a five day confiscation, it is now taken up for just one day.  The students next offense then results in the phone being taken up for three days, five days, and ten days every time after the third offense.

“We are just trying to accommodate people a little more,” explained Smith. “The problem with cell phones in the first place is people abuse them. If everybody would do what they’re suppose to then there would be no abuse of cell phones, then we would not have a problem and we could be real lenient.”

Students believe that with this new policy, teachers will be even more strict.

“Because of that, teachers are more strict on the fact that you can’t have cellphones,” said senior Tali Douglas. “Just because they don’t have pity on you.”

Teachers feel differently, however. Jill Treadway explains how she will most likely be more strict because the students will be more likely to get their phones out.

Some students think that this new policy will not help the cell phone issues while some faculty have hopes that it will.

“I think they’ll get it taken up and think oh well, one day instead of five days and get it out the next day,” said senior Matthew Duncan.

While some people think that the school should go back to the old policy, others think we should stay with the new one.

For Duncan, the first time he messed up, it was the only time.

Duncan said, “I think that it’s just a good slap on the wrist for a one day thing, and you won’t do it again.”

This new policy has hopes of cutting down on the number of infractions that the school will have.

In order for this new policy to stay, students need to make sure not to abuse it.
