Broadcasting class joins PBS news channel

“From what I know, we are joining with our local PBS news station and we are putting together packages for the state of Arkansas and anybody that can view PBS,” said senior Landan Keichline.

“Mrs. Romey went up there in the summer and got us signed up with the Student Reporting Labs,” said junior Seth Cleveland.

Teacher Jacki Romey explains, “I think it’s an exciting program to be involved in. It’s going to give my kids real life opportunities working with professionals in a national news program.”

Being a part of the Reporting Labs, students have the opportunity to have their own story to be online and the possibility of airing on TV on PBS NewsHour.

Lion TV has been assigned two well developed stories that may actually go on national news.

The two story ideas that PBS wants Lion TV to work on is a story on immigration and poverty.

“I’ve already got some ideas, so I’m excited about the possibilities of kinda pushing my kids where they may not have wanted to go before,” said Romey.

Lion TV has already had the chance of sending stories of their own.

It started last year with seniors Dylan Rohr and Lacey Hall sending in interviews and stories, which was the first step in building their progress in the program.

The staff is very confident that in the next five years, this program can be very beneficial.

“They will be able to network with people at AETN and other local television stations, and that is just a great way to break into the field,” said Romey.

“Hopefully it will get more publicity towards Searcy High School and our program and it can make our continent better,” said Keichline.

“I think this exposure is going to take us to the top of national high school broadcasting programs.

For the time being, it is just a work in progress; we hope to reach our goals in the near future.
