Searcy High School’s Fellowship of Christian athletes sponsor “See You at the Pole,” a world-wide event held every year.

See You at the Pole is an event in which students meet at their school’s flagpole before school on the fourth Wednesday of every September to pray for their school, students, teachers, government, and our nation.

It is important to note that See You at the Pole is not a demonstration or political rally. It is not trying to make a statement for or against any particular thing, but is just a chance for students to get together to pray.

High School is not ordinarily a place where students can gather together and pray, but as the sun rose over the school last Wednesday morning, something unusual happened. A large group gathered hand in hand around their school’s flag pole.

“At See You at the Pole, we have a group of student and even some teachers that come out and we pray for each other and our community and school,” said junior Tori Sanders.

This is a completely student organized event that serves as a way to build positive relationships between the many students here at the high school.

“It is a great opportunity for students to come together and just pray for their school,” said local youth pastor Craig Woodson.

“It is just a God thing for our school to let us do it on the school campus,” Sanders said.

However unusual it may seem, this annual event is not new to the community of Searcy.

“It started a long time ago; it is in every state, and nearly every country across the world,” said Woodson.

See You at the Pole was started in 1990 by some teens in Burleson, Texas. One Saturday night they felt compelled to pray, and so they went to three different schools and prayed at each school’s flagpole. From there a challenge was issued to students throughout Texas to meet at their flagpoles and pray simultaneously.

On September 11, 1991, the students got their national day of prayer, as over one million students from all around the country gathered around their flagpoles at 7am to pray. Today that number has grown to 3 million students in the U.S. and there are also students in 20 other countries that participate in the event.

So at 7am on September 12, 1999 over 45,000 students met at their flagpoles to pray before school. This tradition has continued for nearly 15 years now.

This allows Christian students the chance to gather together in fellowship with each other at their public school.
