Student Council donates turkeys to faculty for holidays

Screen Shot 2013-12-12 at 2.42.59 PMEvery year, Searcy High School student council members hands out turkeys to the Searcy support staff for Thanksgiving.

They do this to thank them and to let the staff know that the hard work they put into running the school smoothly is acknowledged.

The support staff includes the east and west office secretaries, custodians, receptionist in the guidance office, school nurse, resource officer, and teacher aides in the special education department.

“We want to let the support staff know how much we appreciate what they do for our school,” said  Vicki Moseley, sponsor.

“I enjoyed it because it felt good to give back to the lady who has helped me with so much (the nurse), and helps kids every day,” said tenth grade representative Hannah Akridge.

Moseley said this has been a tradition at Searcy High for years.

“Mrs. Akridge and I became student council sponsors in 2002 and we inherited this project from the previous sponsors,” Mosely added. “So we are not really sure when the project began, but we believe it is a worthy project to continue.”

Student council gets their turkeys from local Searcy grocers.  This year it was the Neighborhood Market, but in past years they have used Mayflower, Harps, and Food King.

“I love the idea. I love that the students get to give something so vital to Thanksgiving to well-deserving folks who work hard to maintain this great school,” said Hannah Akridge.

Student council also holds many other fundraisers throughout the year.

Earlier this year, they sold  Little Caesar’s Pizza kits and the money raised was  used to buy the turkeys.

Also, the council works the concession stands at basketball games and before that , they raised funds by car-hopping at Sonic.

Student council will continue the tradition of  giving the turkeys to the support staff of Searcy High School.
