Zombie Fun Run kicks off EAST project

The EAST Program recently hosted the Zombie Fun Run, a zombie-themed fun run intended to gain awareness of the Walk Through History project EAST has been working on.

Walk Through History is a trail around Searcy that focuses on historical buildings. The students working on the project hope it will encourage a sense of local history among the people, as well as encourage healthy recreational activities, such as going for a walk.

The Zombie Fun Run was a 5K, beginning and ending at the court square. Students, as well as participants, dressed up as both zombies and survivors for the event.

Awards were given out for the following categories: Most Fabulous Zombie, Most Fabulous Survivor, Most Prepared Survivor, Most Realistic Survivor, Most Realistic Zombie, Best Zombie Group, and Best Survivor Group.

Those who attended certainly enjoyed themselves.

“I had a fun time” said junior Michael Taylor.

“I would go again if it was just a little warmer,” said Haley Matheny.

Even though the event attracted less participants than what EAST had hoped for, most students still thought that the event was a success.

“I expected more people to show up, but it still worked,” said junior Chris Martin. “I would do it again.”

Students didn’t enjoy just the event.

Haley Matheny, EAST II student and director of the Zombie Fun Run commercial, recounts filming for the event.

“It was just a small group of us students who went to the court-house to start filming [the commercial]. We had Orion Hulsey and Ben Raiford on the camera, Nick Macmahan doing the makeup, David Matthews and Logan Light on crew, and the actors,” Matheny stated. “At first, we filmed with our original actors and all of our zombies. But, after editing, we had to use a backup scene for the sake of time. This was the best part of the Fun Run for me.”

Students took on a variety of roles in working up to and during the event. Directing foot traffic, documenting the event, and coding the Walk Through History website are just a few examples of what the students did.

For those who were unable to attend the event or for those who were unable to pick one up while at the event, the EAST Program is selling leftover shirts made for the event for $5; Sizes include S, M, L, and XL. To purchase one, stop by room 531 any time after 4th period.
