FCA service day gives helping hand to local homeless shelter

DSC_0006Fellowship Christian Athletes went to Jacob’s Place for a service day.  At Jacob’s Place, FCA participated in whatever needed to be done to help out. Jacob’s Place is a homeless shelter for women and children. It supplies them with a shelter and the essentials with life, and helps them get a second chance to get them back on their feet. It is an essential part of Searcy to keep families off the streets.

“It is a temporary home for families who do not have one,” said junior Trace Laffoon. “It is a second chance for many people.”

FCA assisted Jacob’s Place workers by cleaning up around the house. They sorted through the garage and rearranged the upstairs to make more room for the families living there. They also did yard work by raking up the leaves and trimming the bushes.

“At the house, we organized the upstairs of the house, raked the leaves up, and sorted the garage to help transition the families,” said sophomore Jacob Rose.

The volunteers tried to do whatever was asked of them to help out however they could. Members got to see a unique side to how an organization works and needs volunteers to stay in business.

“It means a lot to help them out. If I was in their place, I think I would be very happy if people were thinking of me and wanted to help me out,” said junior Sidney Riggan.

Lending a helping hand changed perspective for a lot of the students. It made them be thankful for everything they have every received . It also made them realize not everyone has a perfect life, and that they should always be thoughtful towards others.

“I take a lot of things for granted,” said Riggan. “Some people don’t even have a house and we need to be more thankful for everything we have.”

Some other volunteers felt differently after helping out. They all got to see the people who have received help, but they realize that there are many more families that need help with this. The students felt that maybe they could look for new ways to help out more families.

“We were able to help out the lucky ones, people who needed help and have found it,” said Laffoon. “It is awesome to be able to help these families out, but people need help everyday. Still, I loved helping out and hope to do it again sometime soon.”

Although it was tough work, each member had an experience there and they each got something special out of it.

“Helping out at Jacob’s Place was great,” said junior Delaney Bowles. ” I can tell that what we did for a few hours really helped the workers more than we will ever know.”

FCA hopes to do another service day in the near future to help Jacob’s Place out some more.
