Electronic journalism class keeps school updated with online newspaper

Screen Shot 2014-03-11 at 11.03.57 AMIt is not a very known fact that Searcy has a website that is run by students.

“Well, the website is basically a bunch of students from 9th through 12th grade and we write a bunch of stories about school or sporting events,” said editor and senior Sara Hamilton.

Searcy Lion Press is not just written stories, it is also broadcast journalism as well.

“The website is pretty much just a written story that jumpstart sometimes does and we write them down to actual stories or interviews at different events and its kind of like a newspaper article but on a computer,” said junior Elizabeth Taylor.

Visiting the website is a great way to obtain information about events around the school.

The job of the reporters is to write stories for the website and also take pictures.

“We just come in every day and get assigned stories. Stories as in a basketball game or  something interesting going on with an SHS student,” said Taylor.

“We do classical journalism stuff. We come up with ideas of stories, usually something happening in the community and we interview people, take pictures and write a good story on it,” said senior Alan Fielder.

“My job is to look at all the stories, fix mistakes if they have them, which some students are very good writers, so I don’t have to do much of that. But there are some that are learning how to write so I teach them. I fix pictures, edit pictures, and publish stories,” said Hamilton.

There are many reasons to why an electronic journalism is more convenient than a newspaper, besides saving paper.

“Its easier to get to and it has every story we’ve written so you can go back and read a story a couple of months ago,” said Taylor.
