Students, workers prepare for Valentine’s day

Screen Shot 2014-03-10 at 2.26.09 PMValentine’s day, also known as the day of love, is a time where millions of chocolates, roses and other cheesy gifts are sent to many Americans in order to win the hearts of crushes, spouses, and secret admirers.

“I think that I speak for myself as well as anyone else when I say that the only way to really enjoy Valentine’s Day, is if you have a valentine,” sophomore Austin Gardener said.

403 million flowers are cut and grown specifically for valentines day each year. 14% of women in the world send themselves flowers each year. Freshman Taylor Province said that Valentine’s day is also a day to love yourself.

“I beg to differ; it doesn’t matter whether or not you’re alone or with someone on Valentine’s day. Treat yourself, buy some candy, go to a movie, get some dinner, go see friends, just do anything. It can be a fun day for anyone you just have to make the best of it,” she said.

Stores everywhere began to run lower and lower on the amount of gifts that they could sell. 13.19 billion dollars is spent on Valentine’s day each year.

“As usual we sell gifts for valentines, just like any other store, but were one of the largest, if not the largest. We’re expected to have a ton more and to never run out,” said Wal-Mart employee and junior Jacey Brown. “Sometimes it gets a little harder. We have to keep all the merchandise stocked, make sure we have what they are looking for, and if we don’t we have to find some way to, maybe, order it.”

Brown said that she looks forward to the selves being empty.

“It was extremely crazy for me; it is so weird when you see all of the shelves bare,” said Brown.

34.6 percent of the population spend time take loved ones out to eat, and and other such things. Many couples around school do something special for each other.

“I took this girl out and I’ve liked her for a while now. I thought it would be the perfect time to get to know her better; it turns out that I had a lot of fun,” said junior Connor Vrooman.

Gardener thinks that the whole point of Valentine’s day is to spend a lot of money on women.

“I think it’s all really just for the girls to get gifts and make the guys pay for everything they want. It shouldn’t even be a holiday, its pretty pointless if you ask me,” he said.

“When put in the situation, to decide if Valentine’s day is really a holiday, I’m not entirely sure what I would choose. I mean I feel like it is because its an actual day, but it doesn’t have much meaning,” sophomore Jordan Brannon said.

The holiday is really popular around school, mainly within the couples, even though there are a lot of negative opinions concerning the subject. The most important thing to remember is that it’s simply a time to show your love in chocolates, flowers, and stuffed animals.
