Museum brings school history to life

The Eddie Mae Herron Center in Pocahontas is a museum dedicated to the original African American school and Saint Mary’s African American Episcopal Church.

“We never could get enough money to keep the building active,” said Eddie Mae Herron, founder. “I have always been a dreamer and so I thought that there was some way we could save this building.”

Herron thinks the history of the building needed to be preserved and the old school building seemed the perfect place.

“I have always wanted a place where we could come and talk about our history,” she said.

During its time the school didn’t have a playground so the students made do with what they had.

“We jumped rope, played marbles, and some of the kids used grass to learn how to braid hair,” said Herron.

The school also help to serve as a church for the local community.

“We would have service the second sunday of ever month,” said Herron. “At that time
the teacher would get all of the students to move the desks out of the room and put benches in their place.”

If you are ever in Pocahontas Arkansas make sure you take the time to tour the museum.
