Lions look toward winning season

With 12 seniors gone from last year a lot of people are curious to see how the football team will perform this season.

“This season I and the entire lion football team expect to go undefeated at home,” Mason Guthrie, a senior, said. “We expect anywhere between seven and eight wins.”

Many of the football players believe that this year will be a winning season, and everyone seems to have high expectations about it. The first game against North Pulaski goes into the win column with a 41-13 victory last Friday.

Trevor Holden, a senior, says the Lions, expect to be much better than last year and hope to get tons of support from fans.

“We have been working extremely hard in the summer to prepare for the season from FastLions to 2-a-days here right before school started,” Holden said.

The football team had a scrimmage game recently, against Little Rock Christian.  The scrimmage consisted of two full quarters and then each team got 6o plays.  The Lions scored three touchdowns to beat Little Rock Christian, with one touchdown by Darius Bowman and two from Antwan Arnold.  Also, the defense had two interceptions by Jonathan Powell and Matthew Parsley.

“We had plenty of positives but still have lots to work on before North Pulaski and then the big one, Batesville,” Holden said.

Senior Mason Guthrie, said that the Lions were much more physical than they were on both sides of the ball.

“We had three turnovers on defense and several three and outs.” Guthrie said. “Offensively we ran the ball really well and expect that to be a strong point for us this year.”

Guthrie added that the team wants to host a playoff game.
“We expect to do much better than last year and to start a tradition for the Lion program of winning,” Guthrie said.

Many of the players agree that the run will be a crucial part of the success of the team this year, but they also believe that they have the ability to complete crucial passes, behind Senior Quarterback Dezmond Stegall, if necessary.

Senior Austin Harris believes that the scrimmage helped them see what they need to focus on before the first game.

“We have a solid backfield, both offense and defense,” Harris Said. “Our backfield is faster than ever, and our defensive backs are stronger then ever also.”

Harris also said that he expects nothing less than second round of the playoffs.

The first home game is against Batesville on September 9 at 7:30 p.m.
