Test Taking Tips

We’ve all seen him, in the classroom, with the teachers. He’s sat on all of our desks at least once! None of us like him or any of his friends. They come in all shapes and sizes. Some come unexpectedly. Some we have days, maybe weeks to prepare for. Tests.

As we know, the nine weeks are coming to a quick end. That means one moment closer to summer, maybe even graduation. It also means tests, tests, and yes- more tests… There are many ways to study, and everyone may prepare for test in different ways. Here are a few ideas.

Flash cards:

Personally, I love this method. They don’t have to be neat or decorated. They just have to work.  Always keep them with you so you can study any time. Waiting for your mom in the car, if you have some free time in class, or even just sitting at home. It’s an easy way to quiz others and yourself at the same time. You can see what you know and what you need to know more of.

Making (AND KEEPING) a Study Time:

Studies show that those who study do better on exams than those who just ‘cram’ right before the test- but I’m sure you could already tell by your grades. Set aside certain times of your day to sit down and study. It sounds horribly boring, but it works. The amount of time needed depends on you and the amount and complexity of the material. Scientist usually recommend two hours a day. It sounds bad, I know, but it helps if you break it up and add a snack break, or go outside for some fresh air for a bit.

Setting:

When you’re studying, you must be in a calm environment to soak up the information better. I go to my room and put on some music quietly (John Williams stations on Pandora is really good to listen to). Other people may go outside. Some even goes to a coffee shop or Midnight Oil if you’re in Searcy. If you want some quiet, prepare for it. Try to be somewhere where you won’t get distracted or interrupted. Get all your supplies before hand and clear your mind to “get in the zone.”

Random Quizzes:

I don’t remember where I got this idea from, but I put different questions from the study guide on sticky notes and stick them in random spots. Bathroom mirror, by the light switch, on your notebooks, in your locker, even on the dashboard of your car! Anywhere you will notice them. Whenever you do, answer the questions (be sure to put the answer on the back so you can always see if you’re right). You will remember them better and better each time! The test will be a breeze!!

I hope these tips helps you out!
