Tips for Overcoming Speech Anxiety

Searcy (LP) Many individuals experience difficulty with speech anxiety and battle to discover approaches to overcome it. It makes it difficult to tell others your point and can make you lose some credibility towards your objective. What regularly keeps us from telling our story effectively is not our powerlessness to explain what we do, or how firmly we have confidence in the service of what we offer. Rather, it is just the fear of talking before a crowd of people. Being afraid while speaking can put a scratch in your credibility and  cause adverse effects that can stop you from accomplishing your objectives.

Here are some tips to help you overcome your speech anxiety.

  • Reframe the questions you ask yourself. When you worry before a high-stakes presentation, you may have a tendency to ask yourself negative questions, such as “What will happen if I forget my material?” or “What if I mess up?” This form of self-talk is like throwing gasoline in a room on fire. Instead ask yourself what would happen if you did your best and got everything you wanted.
  • Practice out loud.  Many times when you just practice in your head you run into the problem of not noticing your mistakes. When you read aloud you are more likely to catch any mistakes you’ve made
  • Memorize the sequence of your slides. Knowing the sequence of your slides so you can anticipate and announce a slide makes you look in control.
  • Take some deep breaths. This simple advice cannot be emphasized enough. When you’re nervous, you breathe rapidly and shallowly. This is telegraphing to the audience that you’re not confident. Slow and measured breathing is a sign that you’re in control.
  • Pause frequently.  If you just take time in between thoughts you will be less likely to stumble over your own words.  As simple as it is it will help make sure you can better express your thoughts and ideas.
