Piggy in McNeils

Searcy (LP) In Mrs.McNeils 10th grade class, the sophomores have been doing dissection week but not in the normal way. With the last teacher they directed frogs, well Mrs. McNeil thought maybe pigs would be more like the human system then frogs. “My students are learning about the human body systems so I figured it would be a good learning experience and a good opportunity.” McNeil told me. She most certainly does not regret her decision even though the smell does make her want to get that part fixed. Everyone seems to be enjoying it even though the constant complaints from her students happens a lot. The smell maybe horrendous but it is a very good teaching opportunity.

In an interview with one of her students, Ashton Schlem  said that “The dissection is absolupiggytely awful, I don’t touch it at all.” If she could change the experiment she would spray air fresheners all over the room to get the smell out of there. When asked about the process Schlem said, “Basically you get a pig from a box, bring it to your table that should have a pan that has wax in it, a utensil tray, and gloves, then you take the pig out and start with the mouth dissection. Later on in the experiment you get string and tie the string around the pigs feet tying it where the belly is showing.”

Throughout the week we do a different system everyday, showing all of the parts in the pigs body. Not everyone was happy about the pig dissection/experiment but it certainly was educational. Gloves were definitely the savior of the experiment and the makeshift masks out of paper towels were the only things getting us through these weeks. Mrs. McNeil is definitely leaving a streak at this school, duct tape and all.
