Fashion Through the Decades.

Searcy (LP) Throughout the decades fashion has continuously changed, but always coming back around. Our fashion from 1890 until now has drastic changes from corsets all the way to crop tops!

In the Rise of Haute Couture in 1890-1920’s, women of upper class coveted Parisian designs. Corsets, full skirts enhanced unnatural curves, and hats grew out of control! During the Roaring twenties women began wearing loose clothing, shapeless, and flattened busts. Corsets soon became a thing of the past and Flappers became popular. They would cut their hair short, wear short dresses exposing limbs, and started using makeup! In the Great Depression military inspired clothing became a thing, “square shoulders” also were a big hit in the late 30’s! During the Post War era, around 1950’s, fitted jackets with cinched waist full calf-length skirts, boxy suits, and slim skirts in tweed. Synthetic fabrics became popular, like, nylon, polyester, and acrylic. Poka dots and long skirts with poodles were also big!

The 60’s were known as the Flower Power era. The youth became the fashion leaders, the hippy look was the outfit of the decade. The most common articles were the tie die shirts and bell bottom jeans. Two of the most popular looks were the Mods and Rockers. Rockers wore black leather jackets, and Mods were more stylish and bohemian. Designer Mary Quant made the mini-skirt that also became a fad quickly. During the Saturday Night Fever of the 70’s, disco dance became world wide. Polyester was the go to fabric because when everyone went to go dance under the disco the fabric shined! During the 80’s power suits became a hot hit. Crystal Myers said, “Growing up in the 80’s the most popular style was Umbro and cavarichie jeans. Suede jackets with inside pockets were also a big fad.” Also designer brands  were thrown around to try to flaunt symbols of wealth. This is also when credit card used increased tremendously.

In the 90’s, “causal Fridays” were the thing. Everyone was more into being laid back and comfortable. And now old fads are coming back around again! Regan Wortham said, “There are so many people everywhere going back to the old trends when we were kids! The 90’s are here again!” The crazy thing about fashion, it always comes back in one way or another. Almost every trend comes back with a twist! Let’s see where fashion will take us next!
