Mike Wilson decided to help make the project, because of his experience with cancer. When his daughter turned 14 she was diagnosed with large cell lymphoma.  “I understand the harm that cancer can cause not only emotionally, but financially,” Mike stated. This experience helped him help others. In the beginning, he was helping with Relay for Life, but after working and traveling he came back and received a call from Mrs. Sherry about a common friend who was diagnosed with cancer. This was his story to him choosing his path to becoming a local hero in many cancer patients eyes. Of course he didn’t do it alone, Sherry Wilson had a big part in the processes as well as Myrtle Hughes.

Sherry Wilson says,”It actually began due to a friend having cancer and she had documented on Facebook the challenges she was up against due to using experimental treatments and insurances not covering them. As I read her post, I began to cry, due to the fact that she stated she was making a video for her children and for them.” Sherry had also been involved in Relay for Life in White County with Mike Wilson and Myrtle Hughes. She decided that the people in our hometown needed help with their own cancer needs. She then contacted Mike Wilson and Myrtle Hughes to work together and created this foundation, so instead of the funds going to a National funding where they didn’t see immediate affects for our hometown, they decided to get together, while bringing in more board members to help fund the needs of cancer patients in our community creating White County Kicking Cancer foundation.

Myrtle Hughes wrote her story on their online website. About her son getting leukemia at 2 1/2. Due to this she knew the struggles of  cancer and how it affected people, so when Sherry called it pushed those thoughts and feelings into real life situations. Mike, Sherry, and Myrtle met and made White County Kicking Cancer Foundation.

On the day of the run the team of cancer fighters released balloons in memory of Alan Dixon, 10 ,purple and in honor of a survivors who cancer has returned 10 pink. Mostly due to Halloween events only 3 racers decided to help participate in this event a 12 year old, Shawn Price, a 23 year old, Kenton Lee, and a 20 year old Caleb Smiley. All 3 got first place in their division, however overall Shawn Price won the race. Even though there was only 3 racers the event was fun and spirited. All of the racers and staff where in a great mood and gave their full support to the foundation.

White County Kicking Cancer Foundation will be ‘Kicking’ their new
website very soon. This foundation is working to get their 501(c)3 to become a non profit organization. Any donations are welcome. Below is contact information.

Last year this organization did it’s first 5k/1k race called the glow run in the fall. Later in the spring they did a jail & bail fundraiser. Both events had great turnouts. Mike, Sherry, and Myrtle are already planning their upcoming spring event.
