Valentine’s day is the traditional day on which lovers express their love for each other by sending Valentine’s cards, presenting flowers, or offering confectionery. The holiday is named after two among the numerous Early Christian martyrs named Valentine. The day became associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages when the tradition of courtly love flourished and it is most closely associated with the mutual exchange of love notes in the form of “valentines.” The reinvention of Saint Valentine’s Day in the 1840’s has been traced by Leigh Eric Schmidt. Modern Valentine symbols include the heart-shaped outline, doves, and the figure of the winged Cupid.

People often go out and celebrate the Valentine’s Day. “ I think I will go out to dinner with my boyfriend, Drew, and we will exchange gifts.” Chesni Raibley said, a senior at Searcy High School. An 11th-grade student at Searcy High School, Courtney King, said she might go to a park and have a picnic or go out to eat with her boyfriend. It is a tradition for people to give gifts to their lovers, families, friends and people they love. “ I will give chocolate, flowers, cookies, cakes, and jewelry to my mom, my sister, my cousins and my boyfriend.” Courtney King said. “ I am not sure what gift yet. But last year, I made my boyfriend a scrapbook of everything we did together and it was full of pictures, movie tickets, and cards. He got me a stuffed bear and took me out to dinner. Gifts and flowers will spend a lot of money.” said Chesni Raibley. In recent decades, 1 billion Valentine’s Day cards are exchanged in the US each year. That’s the largest seasonal card-sending occasion of the year, next to Christmas. The average amount which Americans will spend on flowers, candy, apparel, jewelry and other gifts on Valentine’s Day is up to $142.31 last year. The statistics show that people spend a lot of money on gifts on Valentine’s Day, but many people think it is worthy to spend money on the people they love. “I know I might spend a lot of money, but I think it is worth to let people know that I love them.” said Courtney King.

While people from all over the world are celebrating the Valentine’s Day, they also want to give the best wishes to our friends, families, and people we love in February. Happy Valentin’s day to everyone and I hope this February 14th will fill with love and romance.
