Diane Barrett Superintendent of Searcy Schools spoke at the ceremony. She spoke highly of Searcy High schools Principle Claude Smith who presented the scholars of 2017. “The speech made me feel very very good I was not expecting Mrs. Barrett to do that or I would have found a chair and not been on the stage.” Mr. Smith got a standing ovation for his 41 years here at Searcy High School.

The reception following the ceremony was just as beautiful and the food was wonderful thanks to our cafeteria workers. The event takes lots of work from many people. Mrs. Roddy and Mrs. Cleveland in the guidance center and Mrs. Daves in SHS registrar run reports and check grades so no one gets missed. “I’m amazed at the load these students carry work, ball, band.” Mrs. Roddy continued “My favorite part is watching the kids get recognized for their hard work.” While Betsy Bailey ordered plaques, certificates, and programs she also coordinated the event making it the best it could be. “It is a nice opportunity to honor students who take their academic careers very seriously and commend them for their hard work in their classes. National honor society welcomed and served the guest and honors students.

Students ninth through eleventh must have earned 4.0 or higher GPA (Grade point Average) during the first semester of the current year, while twelfth graders have to achieve the honor grad status. In order to achieve the honor grad status a senior must complete a minimum of 8 honors or AP courses and achieve a 3.5 or more GPA over the four years.

These students honored work hard at their high school life and have not given up. Most of the honor students not only have school but extracurricular and excel in them as well. These students are hard and dependable workers that will do well later on in life. This year was the 32nd Annual Scholars event and the only event Searcy High offers for academics besides the senior graduating events. Mrs. Bailey mentioned “Our attendance at the event continues to grow and are parents, grandparents, and our school community are proud to be a part.”
