SHS Students Determining to Stand for the National Anthem

American Flag at Searcy High School

Searcy, Ark., (LP) A previous Quarterback for the San Fransisco 49ers, Colin Kaepernick, has sparked some major controversy involving the National Anthem. While the National Anthem was being played, the football player took it upon himself to stay seated. This simple act would later inspire a few but anger many. After the National Anthem was played, fans were outraged, coaches were shocked, and President Trump went in for the kill. Trump would later slam the owners and coaches of the NFL and Kaepernick himself for this act. “He’s fired!” stated Trump. He threatened that if the coaches did not fire the player, he would fire the coaches and end up boycotting the NFL. Kaepernick explained that he was not trying to disrespect the soldiers who have fought for our country, but to raise awareness in the black community. He believes that race is playing a huge factor in the world that is negative. With all of the issues in the world today involving the black community, he wanted to take a stand and raise awareness. His act has inspired many to stand up for African Americans.

When students and faculty members were asked their opinion, there were mixed results. Resource Officer Don Davis explained that the flag stands for everything this country believes in and it is more than just a piece of cloth. “My great grandpa and many other family members have fought for this country and the flag was folded over their caskets,” said Officer Davis. He fully believes that race is an important issue in this world, but that Kaepernick and his followers could have picked a better, more peaceful way to raise awareness. Most people who are against not standing up believe that if you do not like how the country is running, then leave. They believe that it is very disrespectful to the flag, Americans, and our country.

Senior of Searcy High School Josh Craig no longer stands for the Pledge of Allegiance. He believes that people are too focused on something so little while there are other issues going on in the world. He informed that the first time he did not stand up, the class was livid. “Students were yelling at me to stand up and some even were picking me up from my desk shoving me around,” says Josh. Josh also stated that the teacher was also trying to get him to stand. Later on he was informed that situation should’ve never occurred and the issue was later resolved. People who do not stand believe that no harm is being done and that everyone should raise awareness by participating in this act.

The world will definitely speak their opinions and so will President Trump. Most people are furious about people participation in the act. President Trump is still tweeting angrily threatening the NFL to step in and do something. This makes people who did not even support Trump before the incident have them rethinking their opinion on him. Some people support this act and others are determined to stop it. What are your thoughts?
