Journalism staff builds website

Many people don’t know about one class at Searcy High School.  Electronic journalism might be a small class, but  students in the class write stories and take pictures for the school website, searcylionpress.com.

“This class gives students a chance to explore different types of media, like make stories and video stories and learn to write for the web,” Jacki Romey, adviser said.

The format of the class changed from a printed newspaper to a website several years ago.

Even though it’s not new to the school, it has changed from being a newspaper class to a class that updates a website.

“Since journalism is so much more than a printed medium anymore, we take video, photos and copy and converge them into the website,” Romey said.

Senior Levi Allison likes taking video stories and rewriting them to add to the website.

“We take the stories we see on Jumpstart, put them on the website, and write a summary about it,” Allison said.

The students in this class are interested in it, and work hard.

“My favorite part of this class is the fact that I get to write stories and put them online as my own,” Sara Hamilton, sophomore, said “I like it because I get to interact with students, and I get to experience new things.”

Senior Erika Valdez said the class helps students keep up with what is going on at school.  And she has made friends too.

“It helps me bond with people that have the same interests as me,” Valdez added. “We can inform people and hopefully get people to get involved with us.”

This class is very helpful for anyone interested in journalism.
