Lions football defeats Batesville

In their first home game of the season, the Searcy Lions football team brought in the new

turf in style with a 37-22 pounding of the Batesville Pioneers.  Although the Lions went into

the game as underdogs, they led throughout, dominating on both sides of the ball.  The

Pioneers have won the matchup the previous seven years, making the victory that much

sweeter.

“There is nothing sweeter than a victory, especially right here on this turf, first game at

home, big crowd…our kids came to play- we started fast and finished fast,” said head coach

Tim Harper, who is in his third season as Searcy’s head coach.

Quarterback Dezmond Stegall led the way on offense, throwing long touchdown passes

to Jared Eades and Darius Bowman.  Antwan Arnold also scored two touchdowns on the

ground.

On defense, senior Trevor Holden had a breakout game, hauling in two interceptions

and also recovering a fumble.  Jared Eades and Darius Bowman also had one pick each.

“From the sidelines, to Dezmond Stegall on offense, the receivers played great, Antwan

Arnold played great-  it was a total team effort” said Coach Harper.  “The list goes on and

on.”

The Lions hope to carry some momentum into their next game, when they plan to go 3-0

against Morrilton.  Coach Harper appreciated the crowd’s enthusiasm throughout the

entire game against Batesville, but he expects even more in the coming games, and he

issued a challenge to the students.

“It was packed, [but] honestly, I think we can do even better next week.  So I’m going to

ask the whole student body to come join up- I really think this team is something special,”

added Coach Harper.
