Drama troupe brings ‘Aladdin’ to stage

The drama department picked the play “Aladdin,” for the students to perform.

Not only is Aladdin huge in the children’s movie industry, it is a very well-known play.

“I was excited about doing Aladdin, because I knew that it would be a fun way to sort of relive our childhoods and it would make more people want to come and bring their kids; so in turn we would get more viewers, a bigger audience, and a higher amount of tickets sold and bought,” drama teacher Mandy Taylor said.

Taylor said the characters are all differently named because of copyright, but that doesn’t mean that the play will be much different than the movie.

While casting everyone, the directors had to pay very close attention to who they picked for certain parts, because you have to have the perfect person to play those parts.

“It has been done many times and remade into many different movies, but in my honest opinion the play is fantastic. The way that the cast directors want the characters to look, the way that they need to be portrayed, is crazy. It takes a lot of work just to eliminate some of the people who auditioned,” said Taylor.

Some are nervous about the play, while others, not so much.

“I was very nervous about trying out,” said sophomore Ann Marie Temple. “I get kind of shy every now and then, mostly when I’m in front of people that I don’t know. I’ve been in plays before, but I guess playing the lead is a lot of pressure.”

“I’m not freaking out, yet. It’s one of those things where I’m going to start freaking out the night before the first show or maybe even just randomly it’s going to pop up and hit me,” sophomore Dianna Bartilson stated.

The more the students watched each others auditions, the more anxious each one got.

“It’s a really big deal for us because we get really scared, especially when we are first in line,” said Temple. “I think it’s because a lot of the people who are auditioning are brand new, and some haven’t been in a play before. They don’t really know much and we are counting on them to put their best into their part.”

There were some people that didn’t like the fact that there were new people joining the play.

“I guess you could say that I’m not too ‘thrilled’ to have the new people in our group,” said Bartilson. “You have to be a long time drama geek to be in these kinds of things, even though I’ve only been in the ‘group’ for like a year, I still count!”

All in all everyone seemed to be either very scared, anxious, and  even little nervous, about not only the auditions, but for the whole play.
