Record drought, heat made summer miserable

If there’s anything we all remember from this summer, it’s probably the heat.

This past July was the hottest the U.S. has ever recorded. Which kept many Searcy students from going places they would have gone otherwise.

“It was crazy. It was so hot outside every day. You couldn’t hardly do anything,” said sophomore Nichole Cook.

“I liked it. I’m used to the heat now,” said senior Anthony Luevano. “The only problem is I’ve got no air conditioning in my car. So, it’s kind of hard to go many places.”

“It was horrible. I did not like it at all,” said junior Aspen Harris.

Continuous heat and dry weather created low water levels and a fire ban which kept a great deal of Searcy students from enjoying their camp fires and their favorite 4th of July activities.

“We didn’t get to do fireworks or a bon fire or anything. So, that was sad,” said Cook.

“I think it’s kind of ridiculous that we’ve had it this long because, it kind of put out our 4th of July’s that we wanted,” said Luevano. “So, I couldn’t spend a lot of money on fireworks and everything. I really couldn’t use them. So, I have to wait now to spend any time with the fireworks or anything I bought.”

The dry hot weather has been a recipe for disaster for western states, creating fires that burn up whole forest with firefighters struggling to put them out.

“It was really bad. I felt sorry for them,” said Harris.

“It kinda scares me because my sister lives out west. And knowing that there’s still a bunch of fires going on out there makes me nervous because, I don’t know. There could be one day that she’s okay and one day that she’s not,” said Luevano.

So the question is, with all these summer troubles across Searcy and the rest of the country, did you beat the heat?

And if so how did you?

“I went to the lake, and hung out. I worked in an air conditioned area. Mostly, I hung out at the lake.” said Luevano.

“I didn’t. It was too hot,” said Cook, “I just stayed inside, and went to the pool or something.”

So as Autumn begins, and temperatures start to decrease, remember this summer, and all the effects the heat had on us.
