Students participate in Halloween activities

Most of the people who have plans aren’t even trick or treating or celebrating the dark holiday in any conventional way.

Church, preceding plans, school work and just plain lack of excitement and have all added their contributions to a serious blow dealt to the old-fashioned festival.

“I had homework to do and I really have no time to go out and do anything. My grades are just more important,” sophomore Mary Beth Barden said.

The very few people who actually did celebrate Halloween the usual way really did get seriously into it.

Senior Haley Duncan was of that minority, she wore a full body pikachu suit and enthusiastically walked door to door with all the other kids asking for candy.

“Halloween is the bomb! Why wouldn’t I dress up as Pikachu and get free candy?,” she said.

Some of the local kids had fun celebrating in some absurd, unusual, and perhaps even dangerous ways.

“I celebrated the holiday by blowing a lot of stuff up with some friends,” said senior Tanner Scarborough.

Senior Tommy Lynn said that he was done with all of the excessive socializing brought about with the ‘less important’ holidays that are less family oriented and seemingly optional.

“Most of the customs are overrated and instead of socializing, I think I’m going to simply go home, relax and watch movies,” he said.

Others just didn’t get around to making any plans this year, or dislike anything faintly frightening.

“The holiday is interesting and very likable, but I’m not going to go trick or treat or anything like that,” said senior Alisha Edmunson. “I adore all of the candy, but absolutely hate all of the scary stories and the constant tricks people play on one another.”

It seems that some of the Searcy High faculty, however, did get relatively into the Halloween spirit this year.

Athletic facilitator Bradley Barnett said that he always takes his three children trick or treating and that this year they even have a huge family hay ride planned.

“I celebrated by going to Trunk-Or-Treat, a little thing that my church puts together every year for some good old fashioned family oriented fun,” said secretary Melinda Stake. “I love the holiday, it is fun.”

Despite all of that, many plans just didn’t work out despite good intentions: such is the case of senior Emma Howard’s costume plans with her boyfriend.

“We were going to be chain one and chain two, so, cooperatively, we would be  “2 Chainz” but, that didn’t work out,” she said. “Instead, we went to go eat and watched scary movies. I love the holiday to death, despite my lack of festivities this year.”

Some people blatantly disdained this year’s Halloween.

“Halloween was a joke,” said senior Bryce Strawn. “I didn’t plan on doing anything, and I was happy with that, then I was forced to babysit.”

This has been a pretty unusual and uneventful holiday for most students at SHS, though there are always the few who carry on the enriching traditions.

So you decide, was this Halloween a trick or a treat?
