Student teachers learn in ‘real world’ classrooms

“I haven’t had a problem with my student teacher, Mr. Daugherty. He has done everything that I’ve asked him too, he works really hard, and because of him I’ve made progress with the class very quickly,” world history teacher, Catie Holman said.

Some teachers really enjoy the company and help from the student teachers.

“My student teacher, Mrs. Mackleiay, has done a lot to help out around the class. She has helped me organize and helped the students. I’m just grateful to have her help,” English teacher, Jamie Brown, said.

The students teachers come from colleges all around to aid, and participate in helping the teachers, teach for either nine weeks or a semester.

“I’m staying for the whole semester, which I look forward to, because that just means an even better amount of time to spend with the students, get to know them better, and get to know my environment around me; just to see what it’s really like is a huge privilege,” Daugherty explained.

For some of our student teachers, teaching has always been a job choice.

“I have always wanted to be an English teacher. I love just figuring out how sentences are made and how everything fits together. It’s always a challenge, but I’m sure that when the students finally realize that English can take them far in life, that they won’t really mind it as much,” Mackleiay said.

The students teachers as a whole, no matter what subject they want to teach or are teaching, have much responsibility, that they have to live up to.

“It’s really a big deal. It’s not like what most people think it is. Most think it is easy, but if you think about it, you have many kids in the class. If your job, that day, is to teach them a lesson, their education depends on how well you teach them, they rely on you, during this point in time,” Daugherty explained.

The pressure is very hard to deal with at times.

“I’m not going to lie, there have been times when I’m scared out of my mind, because these high schoolers are so used to Ms. Brown. I feel like they expect more from me, or they expect me to be just as good, but luckily they haven’t acted that way yet, which is really a surprise to me. I guess I’ll get used to it sooner or later,” Mackleiay said.

Some students have learned quite a few things form seeing the students teachers teach, and come into a brand new environment the way they did.

“I think that seeing them do what they are doing, just gives me more confidence in the long run, because some of the student teachers have come back to colleg and decided to follow their dreams. That just proves that they are very dedicated, and that if you want something, go for it, don’t give up and you will achieve,” sophomore Katy Carnitz said.
