The school librarian, Mitzi Cannon, enjoys her job. She especially loves getting students who do not usually enjoy reading, to be interested in a book.
“I love being a librarian. I love books, I love to read, and I really like getting books in the hands of the students,” said Cannon.
Books have always been an important part of Cannon’s life.
“I’ve always loved reading. I’ve always loved books. Libraries have always been my favorite place,” said Cannon.
Cannon did not start out as a librarian, however.
“I was in the classroom for several years, and a friend of mine suggested that we go and get our library degree, work on that together, and I thought it was a great idea, so we did,” said Cannon.
She did not have a hard time finding a job right out of college.
“It just happened that the year that I finished with my degree, the librarian at the junior high decided to retire. I was able to step into her job,” Cannon said.
Cannon says there are lots of things to do in the library besides read books. Students can check out books, or sit and read. And there are newspapers and magazines to catch up on the events of the day “The library is just about open for anything,” Cannon said.
Cannon said students come to the library for many reasons.
“The kids come over from study hall, and if they don’t have any work to do, they’ll sit and play chess or checkers,” she said
Cannon added that computers are available to students doing research, typing, power points, or any school work needed to be done.
“We’ve had kids in lately registering to take the ACT,” said Cannon.
Many different kinds of research options are available in the library.
“There’s all kinds of reference books. We’ve gotten some new resources that are online that are available at school or at home if they have the password,” Cannon said. “There’s just lots of things to do.”
