With their debut album out this past March, the new band on the scene, BASTILLE, has been very successful.


BASTILLE is a new UK alternative band that is slowly taking over Europe and now America. Their single ‘Pompeii’ is number one on the alternative charts, and their album Bad Blood has stayed at number one on the UK top ten since it came out in March. The band has been very busy lately with a tour in the UK that sold out almost immediately after tickets were released and with their video for ‘Pompeii’ being released. After announcing their tour, it sold all 44,000 tickets in a day. They have overnight become one of the biggest in the UK.


BASTILLE is made up of four guys from the UK. Dan Smith is the lead singer and the one who decided to start a band in 2010, Will Farquarson plays the bass, Kyle Simmons is the keyboard player, and Chris Wood plays the drums. They did not think that the band would explode like it has this year. In fact, they thought that they would probably never make it, but they still did it for their love of music.


“Our expectations have been incredibly low. I never, ever imagined leaving Great Britain. For us, going to Scotland was a big deal,” said Smith.


They write their own songs because they want them to sound personal and tell a story. The main song writer is also the lead singer, Smith. He has been writing music and performing since he was a teenager, but he is still a shy person and ironically does not like to be the center of attention. The band also wanted to sound original, so they recorded their album in a studio with just the basics, no fancy equipment.


With this band’s music, you will have to search for the meanings behind their music because they elude to it. Their song out right now is the single ‘Pompeii.’ Their video for ‘Pompeii’ is a song about a conversation between two people that are stuck forever like the bodies that were stuck in the ash in the city of Pompeii where the volcano erupted capturing its victims in the dust forever. The video shows everyone being taken over by this dust and their eyes turn black when this happens. This video is really weird though and really freaky but still really unique and impressive.


Their album though is really inspiring and just all around well developed. All their songs have a deep meaning and really connects to their listeners. This is what helped them blow up so quickly. Each of their songs have a special beat that catches the listeners attention and gets stuck in your head all day long. These songs though are the type that you can listen to in the background while working.  People should really go buy their cd because they are fixing to blow up here in America and people will miss their chance to see them.
