Drama students participate in Cabot tournament

Screen Shot 2014-01-20 at 2.43.42 PMMany students from all around Arkansas have joined together to compete against each other for an award that wins them a title in the drama tournament.

Many students participated in this tournament, to prove that they, too, had what it took to make it in ‘The Big Leagues.’

“I ended up improving; it is one of the many categories that you can choose from. We draw three topics and we spend only about five minutes coming up with what our skit is going to have in it, and then in the end we perform off the top of our head,” sophomore Jordan Brannon said.

Some, on the other hand decided, to take the more complicated way out and perform poems.

“The poem that I performed is called ‘I Do’ written and performed by Andrea Gibson. It is about a woman, who is head over heels in love with her partner who is also a woman. Andrea is speaking about her love and about the fight to have the same right, not only to marriage but happiness all together; it is very touching,” sophomore Saige Anderson said.

Each performance had a meaning behind its story, and each performer had a reason to get that point across to everyone.

“I thought that everyone should know that love is love. You can’t really tell the difference in the long run, love is a feeling that no one can fully describe, and the fact that certain people can’t have the same rights to love as others do is wrong. It is a very touching subject, for not only myself, but others around, because there are so many different opinions on the subject. Andrea made it to where, even though she wants to be happy, fight for her love and get married, she still respects everyone else’s decision,” Anderson said.

Students may have spent day or even weeks preparing for this tournament, but there’s always room for improvement in the long run.

“My students did phenomenal, but that’s just because I love them all. Of course I think they could have done better, but I don’t think, the students or myself would have changed anything about how well they did; they acted mature and showed everyone what we could do,” drama teacher Mandy Taylor said.

The students are practicing and preparing for the spring play “Freak.” Be sure to come and support them in their production.
