Recently, a new teacher has come to Searcy High. Calandra Cook, an English teacher, has a love for both English and literature.
Cook shared her reason for becoming a teacher.
“I had teacher who inspired, challenged, and encouraged me,” said Cook. “Their impact was powerful and I realized I wanted to try to be that person to another generation of students.”
It’s no wonder why Cook teaches English.
“I love English!” said Cook. “Reading plays, novels, poems , or articles about people or characters who lived, struggled, won or lost, gives such insight into ourselves and others.”
A well-read individual is a compassionate individual, says Cook.
“Learning to appreciate writing can help us become better thinkers, as well as more compassionate people.” said the English teacher.
Cook shared her favorite part of her high school career.
“I loved going on school trips, like band competitions, FFA contests, and choir performances. ” said Cook. “These times away from school, but with friends are great memories.
Cook doesn’t play favorites.
“I’ve never had a favorite student, although there are several who have ‘stayed with me.'”, said the teacher. The English teacher listed some of the qualities she admires in students.
“A great desire to learn, a strong work ethic, and the ability to laugh and themselves [are qualities present in some of my favorite students.]” said Cook.
Cook expects her students to put forth their best foot.
“We aren’t all scholars, [and] we won’t all make A’s,” explained Cook, “but I want you to give me your best, whatever that is.”
Cook also urges students to be compassionate.
“Every one comes to school with baggage – and usually no one else sees it.” explained Cook, “Be patient, listen, and put yourself in someone else’s shoes.”
