Wrestle like Lions: Team works to win matches

One of the many sports offered here at Searcy High School is wrestling.   Coach, Coach Steve Leonard, and Ahlf Junior High health teacher, Coach Evans, are the coaches to this sport.  Wrestling is a relatively new sport to  the school.  One wrestler, Garet Dillon, is a very important contribution to the team.

“I’ve won five matches and lost three,” Dillon says.

The wrestlers are split up into divisions by their weight class, and only wrestle others in their own weight class.

“I have really high expectations for the team this year,” Dillon explains, “We’ve been practicing a lot and we’re getting better every match we have.”

Dillon explains that the matches are hard work for the wrestlers, and the practices after school really help prepare them for what they will face at upcoming matches. The team works hard between matches to be ready for competitors from other schools.

Another wrestler, sophomore, Tristan Byers, says, “Sometimes people come and show us different moves and strategies to help us win.”

Dan Willingham is one of these visitors that helps show the team special tricks and moves.

Byers says, “We do conditioning and work on our technique.”

Byers joined the team because he wanted to try some new things and he thought wrestling might be helpful in his future career.  He is another important contribution to the wrestling team.

The team has a match every Tuesday and Thursday.  Check Lion TV or Jumpstart to catch the dates and times of matches.
