Senior finds alternate to school PE course

When the time comes for upcoming seniors to figure out the remaining credits they need in order to graduate, dread overwhelms them when they realize PE is on the list.  Physical Education stands as one of the most dreaded courses required for students to graduate high school. Whether it is the fact that sweat is a daily part of the class or that students are required to change into gym clothing, physical education is not in most students’ vocabulary.

However, one senior at Searcy High School has found an alternative and fun way to get in their remaining credit for graduation.

“I am taking Jiu-Jitsu at ASU,” says excited senior Brandon Cleaver. “I have always wanted to learn a martial art and this is the perfect opportunity.”

Arkansas State University- Searcy offers classes concurrently for Searcy High School students that will help them receive high school credit and college credit at the same time. So, not only is Cleaver getting to accomplish one of his goals, he has the chance to earn high school and college credit.

Jiu Jitsu consists of grappling and striking techniques and is not for the faint of heart. The martial art requires strenuous maneuvers and should be taken seriously when practicing.

“I hope I am prepared strength wise for the class,” Cleaver admits.

The course Cleaver is taking is based on self defense techniques of the Japanese Jiu-Jitsu martial art and will be beneficial to him later in life.

“I am in the Army and I hope this class will help me out if or when I ever get to go out in the field,” says Cleaver.

Jiu- Jitsu is definitely a sport right up Cleaver’s alley and he will enjoy ever minute of it.

“I’m really excited to get in there and learn some hard-core stuff,” concluded Cleaver.
