Most people come to the football games for the football, but there are those that go for the half-time show. During half-time, people will witness the band performing their marching shows.
For the band’s first marching show, they will be using the songs Thriller, Y.M.C.A., The Time Warp, and Disco Inferno. A popular favorite seems to be “Thriller.” All these songs share a similar theme. According to Ashton Stafford, a 12th grade band member, this years theme is “dance.”
When asked how the songs were chosen, Stafford said, “Mr. Luzzi and his wife, Mrs. Luzzi, listen to songs that have similar themes. They choose songs and collaborate with the other directors to narrow the list down to four songs, and once that’s done, our show tunes are good to go.”
Rylee Case, an 11th grade band member, says, “Mr. Luzzi chooses them with his wife. If she can’t sing along, she doesn’t like them,” while Blave DePaepe, a 12th grade band member, says, “Mrs. Luzzi goes through songs, and if she can’t get down with it, she doesn’t pick it.”
Many students enjoy being part of the band. If you aren’t a member, have you ever wondered why these students are in band? Case answered this question. She said, “Because it’s fun. I like marching, the band trips, and hanging out with friends in band. Oh and for the music man.”
Band seems to be pretty well-liked at SHS. What do you think makes band so likable? Stafford said, “I love the music, the friendships, the memories you make, and the footprints you leave behind when you march your best show. Band is just a big family, and we grow as we learn. It’s an unforgettable experience, and I’ll miss my second family when I leave here.”
Depaepe feels the marching competitions will go good this year. “We have a lot of returners this year, and the freshman are learning fast,” he says.
Case was also asked how she feels the marching competitions will go, and she said, “Great. We practice and rehearse a lot. I do not think we’ve ever done horrible.”
Stafford says, “I feel that the band is strong this year, just like all years. We have great music, great players, and great directors, so the futures bright for us, and I’m optimistic about our performances!”
Everyone is expecting a great outcome for this marching season, and catch the band at the halftime show.
