Dancing into the Spotlight

Searcy (LP) Former Searcy High School student, Deaven Mazibuko, is leaping into the dance world with full force. Starting dance classes at the age of eight, Mazibuko has been a trained dancer for nine years. Although he did not start until age eight, he claims he has been a dancer at heart since long before.

“When I was younger, I would always dance around my home and try to recreate the choreography from Missy Elliot videos,” said Mazibuko. “It was and is my best outlet for creative energy.”

Spending so many years dedicated to the same things seems like hard work. When Mazibuko was asked how he stays so motivated to do the same thing every day for so long, he had nothing but good things to say.

“Dance is 10% talent and 90% hard work, so I train every single day to be better than I was the day before,” said Mazibuko.

While Devon used to attend Searcy High School, he is now involved in homeschooling programs, so that he can dedicate more of his time to dance training. Some people may think that putting something like dance above a public education is a bad idea. Deaven has a completely different opinion on the subject.

“Since I have started homeschooling I have sort of rid myself from a lot of distractions, and I have had more energy and confidence to focus on growing both my physical instrument and artistry,” said Mazibuko.

Recently Mazibuko has been pursing dance on a whole new level. He has been busy working hard applying for dance programs and companies that can expand his dance resume and help his future career in dance.

“This summer I will be training at Julliard in New York for two weeks. Afterwards, I will be auditioning for many conservatories around the country and eventually joining and company,” said Mazibuko.

With his path towards dance straight and his goals set, Deaven has good advice to give to any young dancers who are just starting out their training or anyone starting out with any passion.

“Know that what you are doing is important to both the world and yourself. Devote yourself to your art and be as shameless as possible about it,” said Mazibuko.

Deaven is excited to see where his future in dance takes him and he is ready for anything to come.
