Local church raises money for orphans

Fellowship Bible Church has discovered a new and simple way to raise money for orphans worldwide which include using rice bowls.

“Ricebowls are bowls that we put rice in and you can eat the rice and it is very good and nutritious for you, but at our church we have a different view of these bowls and an upcoming program we have that different view is that the rice will not be in the bowl, it’s going to be money and change that we collect on a regular basis,” English teacher Steve Snow said.

Filling up a plastic rice bowl means that you will feed an orphan in a different country for a whole month.

“Rice bowls is a ministry that reaches out to orphans worldwide that are connected to 52 different christian orphanages all around the world and they really try to go to places in the world that are very malnourished like Haiti, India, Ethiopia and what they do is they take the idea of a little plastic rice bowl that looks like a bank,” said Global Missionary Work Leader at Fellowship Shannon Chung. “And all you do is fill it up with coins and dollar bills and by the time your little rice bowl is full you will have about $30 which feeds one orphan child for one month.”

Several students enjoy being involved in this event and giving their own money for orphans.

“Like $30 you can save and give for food and shelter to one child for a month,” said freshman Timothy Weaver.

That extra cash that floats around in your pockets can be put to good use according to senior Morgan White.

“I think it’s a really smart idea cause everybody has pocket change and they don’t know what to do with it so just put it in the rice bowl and it helps a kid have food,”  White said.

Sophomore Carli White said the project has made here think about how blessed she is.

“When I have food at home and stuff and I know that’s hard to realize that they are starving when I don’t even know what starving is,” White said.”In my car when I go to like Taco Bell or something, I get all this change back and I just stick it in my rice bowl and it’s good to know I’m helping out a little kids in orphanages with food.”

Senior Michaelah Weaver said it’s an easy way to raise money over time for people in need.

“I really like doing the rice bowls because it’s unique and it’s different,” Weaver added. “It’s a lot harder to just give like $20 when you don’t make a lot of money, but with the rice bowls you are giving spare change so if you buy something like a coffee and you have fifty cents extra, you can take it home and save it and put it in your rice bowl.”

Fellowship Bible had a Super Bowl party to see how much money raised by breaking the rice bowls.

“Because malnutrition is responsible for the death of over half of children worldwide, these little bowls aren’t just plastic bowls, they are actually super bowls, and because they are super bowls we are going to celebrate as a church by breaking them at a super bowl party and counting up how much money God has raised for orphans worldwide through our church,” said Chung.
