Searcy (LP) Preparing for school in the morning can be a tedious task if a person does not wake up early enough. A big majority of the time people do not have near enough time to eat a good tasting but healthy breakfast. During the week of March 6-10th 2017, Searcy High School offered a National School Breakfast Week to not only show the importance of eating breakfast in the mornings but also for fun for the students. The way it works is every day a student comes in during National School Breakfast Week and eats breakfast through the school. His or her name is entered in a contest, which the winner will be named at the end of the week to win an iPad Mini.
The goal for this year’s National breakfast week is to promote the idea of eating a healthy but filling breakfast every morning. Searcy’s goal in doing this is to try to get more students to take part in eating breakfast at the school, not only lunch. Mrs. Charlotte Davis, RD. States, “I, along with our six cafeteria managers in the district, have noted that many of our students who eat school lunch with us every day do not eat school breakfast, and we just wanted to encourage them this year to do that, in a fun way!” This provides a healthy breakfast with a fun theme. In order to get the students excited, the cafeteria was themed with posters encouraging students to eat breakfast every day.
The winner of this year’s “Take the School Breakfast Challenge” and was named winner of the iPad Mini was Dakota Manzel. Not only has this provided a prize for students over the school district but it has also hoped to promote students to come out every morning and get their daily nutrition before they begin to learn, as stated by Charlotte Davis, “We are hoping that MORE students will choose the option of school breakfast each day even AFTER this week, since research continues to show that students who eat breakfast are healthier overall AND perform better academically, and we want the very best of both of those for our students in Searcy!”
Menus for breakfast are posted monthly on the Searcy School District website. School breakfast in Searcy School District is only $1.00 per student or $0.30 for reduced priced and free for qualifying students.
