The importance of shop class later in life

Searcy, Ar. (LP) — Most students think shop class in the agriculture building of the Searcy High School is not an important class and cannot help you out later on in life, but contrary to what most students believe shop class can help you out with any career choice later on in life whether it would be welding, plumbing, truck driving, mechanic, or what other career that involves working with tools or any other equipment.

The shop teacher of the Searcy High School Agriculture building Mr. Addison Safley is the teacher who does the shop class has given some information on the importance of shop class, he said “I believe shop class is important because I often remind my students that classes in the ag education program are only applied sciences from most other courses they have throughout high school. For shop class in particular, students are applying concepts and knowledge they acquire from classes like algebra, geometry, art, physical science, physics, engineering and others to complete real world tasks and troubleshooting procedures.” Mr. Safley has been a shop teacher ever since he graduated college and got hired at Searcy High School to be their ag teacher. He also stated, “My favorite part of being a shop/ag teacher is that I enjoy watching the students struggle until they succeed. I thoroughly enjoy seeing the face of accomplishment on a student.”

The students in shop class here at Searcy High School say differently. We of the Searcy Lion Press had the shop class students do a survey to see how they feel about the importance of taking shop class in high school, the results came back that about 5% of the Searcy High School students taking shop class currently think having to take shop class in high school is not important by saying “Shop class will not help me with my career in becoming an electrician.” or “Shop class is too dirty because I wind up getting paint in my hair.”

With shop class being important in high school the students of the Searcy High School are having to take the class as a requirement for them to be able to graduate from high school and get a good job in whatever career they are thinking about going into or if they are unsure about what they are wanting to do later in life. For now let’s just enjoy hanging out with our friends while we have the chance.
