Cyberbullying becoming a growing problem with teens

SEARCY, Ar. (LP) – Over the years cyberbullying has become more of a issue. Social media has took over today’s society. Students in high school are very well addicted to social media. Students don’t realize how permanent the internet is. Anything you post or say will always remain in the world. Cyberbullying has become more of a issue than bullying in school due to students hiding behind a screen. Not only do students have to deal with harsh situations, but many kids have to deal with blackmail and things that could lead to a worse situation. Eighth grader Brain Robertson stated, “Every since I got snapchat I have had nothing but drama, on every post and in chats.”

Students look for entertainment and what do they do? Argue and start a conflict on social media. Many cases have been started due to people talking out of anger or depression on the internet. Another student Keenan Coughlin stated, “Lots of kids don’t see the harm they are doing behind a phone because it shows no emotion and sometimes people don’t realize what they have done is forever online.”

Having a phone is suppose to be for fun and to get in touch with people not bully each other. Olivia Robertson stated, “Females are the worse when it comes to online bullying. It’s like girls don’t care about feelings and talk about the next person and say personal things that get out and turned around.” Students don’t think there is anything wrong when the post violent post, drug post, or inappropriate contact. These things can stay with a person and could ruin getting a job in the future. Having assemblies over social media doesn’t look like students listen until it happens to them. The school tries and help to prevent these things but as long as social media is around the cyberbullying percentage will increase.

Freshman Colton Brazeal stated, “I’ve deactivated my social media for a little bit this summer and then Igot back on there was a lot of drama and people going back and forth on snapchat being hateful it’s like our generation don’t get it.” Cyberbullying has become a serious issue in today’s society and getting to a point students can’t even go to school without being on a phone or posting a post. Keenan Coughlin stated, “I sometimes wish I could comment on some post but, than think if I truly wanna be in a argument that is not worth it.” Cyberbullying could be minimized by how much students use social media and didn’t get on the internet when mad or hurt. Students could decrease this issue by the amount of violence and hurt and punishments by not putting everything public. Social media has took a different impact on students lives in today’s society.
