Searcy, AR. (LP) — The Halloween season is a frightfully wonderful time of year. “Spooktober” as it’s often nicknamed, gives people a chance to have some fun before Thanksgiving and Christmas really start up. Festivities often include dressing up in costumes, trick-or-treating, munching on candy, making Halloween-themed baked goods, absorbing delightfully scary books, movies, and other media, and much more.
Halloween often receives mixed responses. Some love it, others hate it, and still others are on the fence about it. However, a quick survey has revealed that an overwhelming majority of Beta Club is at least okay with the holiday to some degree: 35.5% replied with a simple “Yes”, 32.3% replied with an enthusiastic “ABSOLUTELY!”, 29.0% replied with a hesitant “Sort of?”, and 3.2% replied with an indifferent “meh”. “I really love the fall (it’s my favorite season of the year) and I like all of the holidays and things within the season!” senior Anna Farley explained. Joseph Stroupe, on the other hand, says, “Personally, it’s just not my favorite. Compared to holidays like Christmas and Thanksgiving, it just doesn’t match up.”
Of course, half the fun of Halloween is the cool traditions people do for the holiday! “Our traditions that happen around Halloween are carving/painting pumpkins, watching The Nightmare Before Christmas, and eating candy,” notes Dean Shelby. Trick-or-treat is a pretty common tradition of course, it’s a bit less common with high-school students. Junior Karlie Hite states, “I am not planning on trick or treating this year. For Halloween, I am participating in a Halloween party that Key Club is helping with for kids in the community.” Despite this, some students still go trick-or-treating. “Yes, I’m trick-or-treating. Who doesn’t like free candy?” declares Abigayle Whitlow. In agreement, Zoey Mazibuko states that she and her family, “Make cookies, go trick or treating, and go to the pumpkin patch.”
The question of “What is the best kind of candy?” is one that has been debated ever since candy was originally invented. It’s certainly a difficult decision to make. With thousands of different kinds and variations of candy, how could anyone possibly nail down which is the greatest of all of them? While there still isn’t an answer to that, there does seem to be an answer to the question of “What is the favorite candy of the Beta Club?” And, thanks to an extensive survey given to a random pick of about 30 or so members, it has been determined to be Reese’s Cups.
REESE’S CUPS!
Overall, there seems to be quite the variety in candy preferences here. Probably because it’s such a random mix of people. Regardless, there seems to be a rather surprising balance between chocolate and non-chocolate candy for the most part.
At the end of the day, it doesn’t really matter what you think about Halloween, or what you like to do for it, or even what your favorite candy is… all that really matters is that you have fun, and enjoy yourself!
