Key Club Members Attend Kiwanis Luncheons

Searcy, AR. (LP) — Key Club is just one of the many options of clubs students can choose from to participate in at Searcy High School. Key Club is a junior chapter of Kiwanis Club. Kiwanis is a service club with a focus point on serving children in the community.

Key Club partakes in many well-known activities. The Key Club helps put on the blood drive that occurs during the school year and participates in the mud volleyball tournament that takes place towards the end of the school year. Not very many students know that if they are a member of this club, then they have the option to participate in a Kiwanis luncheon that takes place twice a month.

Kiwanis holds their biweekly meetings at lunch time on the first and third Thursdays of each month at the Unity Health Specialty Center where Casandra Feltrop, Arkansas Kiwanis Lieutenant Governor, works. The Kiwanis members invite Key Club members from around the area to join. Searcy High school participates every time while Harding Academy occasionally sends their officers.

Addie Butler has been a Key Club member for three years and is now an officer.

“Any Key Club members can sign up to go as long as they can provide their own transportation, but officers typically get first priority since we usually take notes on upcoming events at meetings,” states Butler.

At these Kiwanis luncheons, Key Club members are served lunch then get to watch an official Kiwanis meeting unfold.

Sarah McCammon, who has been a member of Key Club for a total of two years, describes what the Kiwanis Club goes over in their meetings.

“A Kiwanis Club meeting is just over official club business. They sometimes have officer initiations, speakers come to talk about service opportunities, discuss upcoming projects, and so much more,” says McCammon.

These luncheons help the Key Club members get a better insight on how the Kiwanis Club runs and how they help out their community around them.

“It is a great way to get involved with adult mentors who are passionate about serving their communities,” says Butler.

McCammon also agrees with Butler on how impactful the adults are to the community.

“I love getting to visit with all of the Kiwanis members. It is probably my favorite part about the luncheons,” states McCammon.

Key Club is a great way to get involved at school, and if students choose to attend the monthly luncheons, it could also be a great way to get involved with their community.
