Searcy, AR. (LP) – The basketball season for the SHS Lions has been off to an average start. Having lost more games than won, can the team turn things around? One can hope as the season starts to come to an end. The team is at 10-13 and 5-6 in the Conference. Three more games remain in the season against Jonesboro, Mountain Home, and Nettleton. Senior night is on February 27th and it’s also the final game of the season. The team has done about average at this point but hopefully something can happen that can save the year. The girls basketball team is also having a little bit of trouble this year. So far this season, they are 6-17 while being 1-10 in the conference.
The basketball team practices every day during 8th period in the Gym. They work hard everyday to improve and get better. Three of the seventeen players are seniors. “Playing basketball has been really fun, and I’m going to miss it,” said senior player Eli Noel. Eli plays guard and gets lot’s of playing time during the games. The team always seems to play good but they fall short of winning the game. Multiple games during the season have been very close but have come short. “They look clean. If more time was on the clock, they could have won more games and the team would be higher in wins,” said Ricky Cody, an avid basketball follower. Despite the losses this year, they have won more than they have in previous years.
If they win the last three games of the season, the team could break even in win-loss record. “I’m kinda scared about Jonesboro. I don’t know if we’ll beat them but I’m going to go into the game with the right mindset. We’ll lose if we doubt ourselves,” said Eli. Searcy lost against Jonesboro earlier in the season 71-49, one of their biggest losses this year. Jonesboro is 14-9 so it’ll be an interesting to see who comes out on top. Searcy goes against Jonesboro on February 21st. “I think Searcy can win the rest of the games and if they don’t, that’s okay. There’s always next year,” said Ricky.
The Lions basketball team will certainly try to end the season on a high note. What can the team take into next year? Support the Searcy Lions as they face off against their last few opponents of the season.
