The Coronavirus is affecting 2020 Prom Decisions

Searcy, AR (LP) — One of the main events Juniors and Seniors look forward to during the school year is prom. But, we’re under certain circumstances where the school is thinking hard about cancelling it. Quarantine and social distancing are not our best friends when it comes to actually wanting to attend one of the most looked forward nights during high school. The Searcy School District conducted a survey before making the final decision of rescheduling or not. The survey was for Juniors and Seniors and ended April 6. In a statement Betsy Bailey provided, it’s said that a teacher sent a message to students with incorrect information about cancelling prom. Which was then shared to social media, spreading it even more. If prom is rescheduled, it would be on a date prior to June 13 based on the COVID-19 restrictions at that time.

A senior attending Searcy High School, Jalynn Barker states, “I fully understand why prom might be postponed. But, it doesn’t make the situation any less sad and frustrating.” Many students are upset about prom not happening when it was supposed to. It’s a struggle for most, too. Females bought their dresses and they may not be able to show them off. Most people put a lot of time and effort into preparing for prom, and that might go to waste. Jalynn also says, “They might have to cancel prom due to our current situation. But, hopefully we will have a community prom or something of the sort after the coronavirus is gone.” There aren’t many ways to help this situation we are in currently. But, the district is trying their hardest to do something that will satisfy the students and parents.

The Coronavirus is affecting us as a community. Social distancing and quarantine are the main reasons for our situation with prom. “We need to social distance to help our community out, if we want the coronavirus to stop spreading,” Cathy Powell states. Once the coronavirus stops spreading, prom will come running around the corner. If the students want prom, the community needs to listen to the restrictions due to the coronavirus. Jalynn Barker says, “Social distancing can be really annoying because I can’t see my friends. But, I would rather not get sick or anybody in my family get sick.”

Distancing yourself from other people may be hard, but for the safety of others and prom, you may want to.
