“The purpose of the student council is to represent the students of SHS to the faculty, staff, administration, and community; to promote a positive school climate at SHS; to embody the tenets of leadership, service, voice, and engagement; and to serve the school and community,” Mrs. Edelmann, the SHS Student Council sponsor stated. Student Council has impacted Searcy High School, mostly through the food pantry. Members of the council help stock and package food for the pantry. They plan on continuing it despite covid-19.
The election this year didn’t take much preparation. There’s usually a bit of campaigning for the elections so students get to know the competitors. You can thank the COVID-19 guidelines for not having campaigns. But, Mrs. Edelmann created a google form to sign up to run. “I ran for president because I wanted to effectively have an impact on our students and find new ways to make sure that this will be a great school year,” Isaiah Lawson says.
Isaiah Lawson, the current student body president, has been elected president a few occasions before this year. He has helped organize student council events and has volunteered at various school and community events as the president. “As student body president, my job first and foremost is to ensure that every student has someone they can depend on… My goal for this year is to help every student feel treasured and to foster a close knit community within our student body,” Lawson said. He wants to make sure that this year will be the best it can be.
Sawyer Treadway was in the election with Isaiah, and was elected student body vice president. Isaiah describes, “I can’t even begin to say how much of an incredible guy he (S. Treadway) is. I’m always blown away by his integrity and compassion towards everyone he meets.” As you all should see now, we have a good year coming up with our student council with the spice of COVID-19.
