Ag mechanics class offers hands on experience

Searcy offers many unique hands on classes, but most don’t know about a mechanics class that is actually part of the agriculture program.

Gage Vaughan said the class teaches students about many mechanical process that night be needed in farming.

“We have like a bunch of activities that we have to do,” Vaughan said. “It goes anywhere from electricity, to welding, to plumbing, to woodworking, just anything really.”

The students like the diverse setting of this class and the different skills they get to learn.

“This class is hands on, and all the other ones you have to work out of books,” Cody Churchwell said. “Here the majority of the time you’re out at the shop having fun working with power tools, and welding, and stuff like that.”

Teacher Addison Safely works very hard to make this class educational and enjoyable according to students in the program.

“I’ve  taken the intro class before, and I’ve taken the metals class where I know what Safely does,” Vaughn said. “He works with you and he shows you how to do something, and it’s fun just being out here in the shop.”

Churchwell likes the practical application of the class and especially working with power tools.

“Welding’s a lot of fun because you get to play with sparks,” Churchwell said.
