Yearbook staff udates with donated computers

Lion TV donated six computers to the yearbook when new computers were purchased for TV classes.

“They’ll help a ton. Last year we had two computers, and it was all the groups different  trying to fight over the computers every day,” Elishaba Maina said. “You ran from your last class so you could attempt to work on something.”

The lack of computers last year, made it difficult to do the work needed to produce a yearbook.

“We had other computers in the room but they were ancient and didn’t work,” Maina said

Yearbook adviser, Shannon Holyfield is also thankful for the new computers.

“The computers are going to help tremendously, because before I had only three computers and 20 staff members so everyone couldn’t be typing their story or actually working on their page,”  Holyfield said.

This made it difficult for the staff to meet deadlines.

“It was definitely hard to reach the deadline, especially during a school day,” Holeyfield said. “They would have to stay after school in order to get all those stories in, but now with the computers we usually have a computer for everyone in the room. There may be a few kids that don’t have a computer, but it’s going to go a whole lot faster.”

The new computers already come with some advantages.

“They already had some programs on them that we need, that were updated versions of what we already had, so that’s going to help,” Holeyfield added. “They are also faster than the other computers that we had, so we should be able to get to the pages quicker, and you can view everything on the pages, which is something we couldn’t always do before.”

Lion TV was able to update their computers because of a grant from Career Tech as part of a startup program in journalism.
