Sports Column: Lionsteppers keep up school spirit

Lionsteppers have a long tradition in Searcy that for many years didn’t exist.  But, when a former Lionstepper came back to teach here, the team returned. Lionsteppers have been re-established for two years now and continue to prosper and gain support from the community and other students.

They practice  frequently and relinquish copious amounts of free time to perfect kicks, band dances, and half-time performances.

The team learns a dance sometimes only a week before a performance at either the football stadium or occasionally at the basketball games.

There is generally around fifteen girls on the squad, and each are dedicated and passionate individuals. Rigorous summer practices are a usual occurence, filled with sweat, tears, and determination. The leadership is dissipated between team co-captians and a dedicated sponsor, history teacher Amanda Simpson.

The football games are always filled with excitement as the Lionsteppers cheer on the team and get the crowd on their feet singing and dancing along with the band.

The team also enjoys doing community work, volunteering at the Special Olympics, making Christmas goodie bags for retirement homes, and helping around the school in any way that is possible.

The Lionsteppers have also begun an annual program called the little Lionsteppers. This is a month-long event beginning with two after school practices a week for the girls grades K-6. During this month they learn a dance taught by the enthusiastic girls on the squad and just have a blast hanging out with friends. At the end of the month the little Lionsteppers perform the dance at a basketball game half-time supported by the team and their families.

The Lionsteppers are a wonderful addition to the Searcy High School community that helps keep school spirit up at every event and makes the town of Searcy a better place.
