Students return to lunch system changes

DSCF0336As the new school year starts, many changes are being introduced school-wide.

One of the new changes involves the new system in the cafeteria.

“The pin pads take up more time than saying your number, but it should get quicker after a while,” sophomore Katelyn Thomason said.

The pin pads are a new system for a way for students to check out by typing in their number, but not all students enjoy the change.

“I hate the lunch changes because nobody knows their number and it takes forever to get through,” said junior Caitlin Raia. “You also have to buy a full meal to get through the line, but sometimes all I need is a juice or cookie.”

The lunch ladies though seem to have a positive outlook on the change and think that this is a safer way to ensure that the right account gets charged.

“I like it because a picture of the kid pops up to help me make sure kids are not using the wrong account,” said lunch lady Penne Slaughter.

Like all changes they have had to get used to the new system and are learning all the new procedures.

Slaughter thinks that after a while she will get used to the new procedures after a little bit of training and would not change it for anything because she does not have to type in any numbers.

“It’s harder to find the right button for the right food and if you press the wrong button it shuts you out completely,” said Slaughter. “Just like the kids we have to get used to it too. That is my only issue with the new program.”

The pin pad system also helps with determining what is a best seller by showing how many of each thing is being bought. This will help the cafeteria provide the students with their favorite foods and help them serve the students with the favorites more often. It will also cut back on the non-popular items.”DSCF0329
“It will help us monitor what sells best and help us not run out of the favorites. We can also serve more of the favorites,” said Slaughter.

Students also think the food has improved this year.

They think that all the food looks better, but one food in particular have caught their attention.

“The breadsticks that they give out all the time are delicious. They taste fresher this year,” said sophomore Devin Guthrie. “The only food change this year that I do not like is the having to search and hunt for the honey mustard. I know they have to limit us this year, but I have to have my sauce.”

Though the changes have made lunch difficult, the new system will improve lunch for everyone. Hopefully everyone will catch on soon to make it run more smoothly.
