The Drama department recently performed their “Seussical,” which was a musical rendition of Horton Sits on an Egg by Dr. Seuss.

The play was very popular among students and the families of those who performed.

“I played Gertrude McFuzz who is a bird in love with Horton the Elephant, but is self-consious about her one feather tail,” said junior Sarah Swain.

The performance gave the drama department a chance to get to know each other and make a bond.

“I always love the process of rehearsing the most. The cast spends so much time together, we bond, and become a family. It’s a unique experience,” said Swain.

Putting on plays, however, does have its challenges, but in the end, the cast seems to always pull it together in time for opening night.

“There are always difficulties,” said Swain. “But we are young and human, so we just do our best.”

Each member of the cast has different reasons for loving to perform.

“I love the reactions from the audience. If they laugh, cry, or even just interact with the show, it’s awesome,” said Swain.

Others like being able to portray a story to the audience.

“Everyone communicates in stories; that is how we relate to each other. Acting lets us not only tell a story, but show a story which can leave a much bigger impact on the audience,” said senior Kara Treadwell.

The play was very interactive and fun for the audience. The “Cat in the Hat” would come give the audiences high-fives, and ask them what they thought about the show.

“I was the Cat in the Hat. I really loved the kids’ reaction to my performing,” said senior Jordan McGrath.

Everyone had his or her challenges with the play.

“Because Seussical was such an animated play it required high energy at every rehearsal. My character was very different from my own personality so developing my character was more difficult,” said Treadwell.

The stage lighting and decorations of the show was a big hit. The audience and the crew members had fun with the bright colors and the over all fun energy that came with the show.

“The play was written to be fun, animated, and full of energy. Seeing the kids so excited, their eyes lighting up when we performed, was worth every hour we put on this play,” Treadwell explained.

Dr. Seuss’s musicals have a fun energy that comes with them. The actors got to act sillier and have a better time than in most plays.

“I liked getting to act crazy and have fun,” said McGrath.

Musicals, in general, are a fun experience for both the audience and the actors who play in them. They have lively characters and entertaining story plots. Everyone will certainly be looking forward to the next one.

“It was wonderful to see everyone’s individual talents come together to create a “different” world. I love being able to be someone else and branch out in a unique way. It was a blast,” said Treadwell.
