For the last couple of weeks, a group of students in first lunch have been doing something you would not normally see in a high school.
“Having a lot of people praying in front of everybody, showing that we love Jesus is what the prayer circle stands for,” said senior Karonce Higgins.
Not expecting many to participate in the circle, the group was surprised at how many have joined and regularly participate in it now.
“I mean there’s anywhere from 15 to 30 people, usually its about 20, you know it varies, but they just show up. I walked in one day and circled up, and said ‘I’ve got to get apart of this,” said junior Tori Sanders
.
The prayer circle has grown to be a pretty big deal at school, but it started with a humble beginning.
“A couple of weekends ago, we had this thing at church called D-Now, and we were in small group and started talking about it,” said Higgins. ‘We just got together and said, ‘let’s pray at lunch’…maybe it would be a good thing.”
The students enjoy the time getting to spread prayer throughout the school.
“I think it’s very cool that we are all praying, a bunch of us started it after D Now, and it’s kind of grown,” said senior Morgan Stanley.
“I think the kids just kind of got fired up, and I think we are just kind of tired of sitting back and letting nothing happen,” said Sanders. “We wanted to make a difference just sitting in the lunch room.”
Students come together in prayer for a couple of reasons.
“I think it’s important because we are showing our grace to the man who created us,” said Higgins.
They want to try to be a better influence to their fellow peers and are trying to set a Christian example.
“I think we can be a witness with our words, and we can also be a witness by our actions, and I think we people see us praying they wanna know whats going on,” said Sanders. “I think they will see Christ through us Praying and lifting his name up.”
There are different views regarding the prayer circle.
“It can be positive and negative, I mean it can give good names for Christians and it can give them bad names as well, so I mean it can go either way on that one,” said senior Aaron Krystofik.
Most students though have a positive outlook on the prayer circle, believing that it helps students.
“Well, the people who have stepped up, who definitely take on a responsibility, and when people see you praying, then they are going to expect you to be,” said Sanders. “I guess it helps us be more Christ-like, and I think that you’ve just got to take that responsibility, and you’re held at a higher standard.”
Some students feel like it is a positive thing due to feeling it is a way to express themselves.
“I think it’s a really positive thing, I think its right for people our age to express their believes, whether it be Christian, or not. I mean that’s everybody right, but I do think its a positive thing to see,” said senior Logan Denney.
If you are interested in being apart of the prayer circle, it starts at the beginning of first lunch.
